Precession swirl off the inlet generator 3D IN 2D OUT LUXB Swirl · 1:30 · ±0.5%

The LUXB Precession Swirl family meters gas, steam, and liquid across DN25 to DN300. Precession-swirl off a fixed generator gives ±0.5 % of rate over a 1:30 turndown, with built-in temperature and pressure compensation outputting mass flow in kg/h or Nm³/h.

Six models span the gas, steam, and LPG-vapor applications below. The 3D / 2D straight-pipe rule fits branch spools where vortex needs 10D / 5D. CNEX Ex d IIC T6 Gb ships standard; lead time 5–7 business days.

How precession swirl flow meters work

A precession swirl flow meter measures volumetric flow by spinning the gas through a fixed swirl generator at the meter inlet. The swirling flow contracts as it enters the throat of the meter body, and the vortex core precesses around the central axis at a frequency directly proportional to flow velocity. A piezoceramic sensor mounted outside the gas-wetted bore detects the precession through the pipe wall and converts the frequency to volumetric flow rate.

Built-in T+P compensation on the LUXB Series adds an integrated Pt1000 RTD and pressure transducer feeding the on-board flow computer. The compensated output is mass flow in kg/h or volumetric flow in Nm³/h on the 4-20 mA loop. Because the inlet swirl generator dominates upstream velocity profile, the meter is immune to upstream disturbance after just 3× DN of straight pipe; a quarter of what vortex meters require.

Swirl versus vortex versus thermal mass

Choose swirl when straight-pipe is short or the medium is low-density. Choose vortex for steam-heavy service across DN15 to DN600. Choose thermal mass for wet or low-velocity service.

Universal LUXB install requirements

The LUXB precession-swirl family shares install requirements across all 6 models.

  1. Send the gas service and operating range at order timeThe factory K-factor depends on the configured gas (NG / biogas / N₂ / O₂ / H₂ / compressed air / LPG blend) and the operating pressure and temperature. Composition variance beyond ±5 % requires the live composition input option.
  2. Respect 3D upstream and 2D downstream straight pipeThe fixed swirl-generator at the inlet straightens flow inside the meter body, so the LUXB tolerates 3D / 2D where the LUGB vortex needs 10D / 5D; the Series advantage on tight skid installs.
  3. Confirm the hazardous-area zone on the quoteCNEX Ex d IIC T6 Gb (flameproof, Zone 1, gas group IIC) ships as standard for hazardous-area orders. Verify the site zone classification at quote stage so the matched cert documentation ships.
  4. Wire only the loop you need; no external T+P transmittersTemperature and pressure are read on-board, so the field wiring runs only the 4-20 mA loop (or RS485, or HART) back to the DCS. Eliminates the 4-instrument vortex + T + P + flow-computer stack.
  5. Install with the bore filled; no partial-fill operationThe swirl precession signal corrupts on a partially-filled bore. Especially after long horizontal runs that may pool condensate (biogas / saturated NG) or oil mist (post-compressor air), specify upstream KO-pot or top-mount probe option.

Frequently asked questions

What is a precession swirl flow meter and how does it measure flow?+
A precession swirl flow meter measures volumetric flow by spinning the gas through a fixed swirl generator at the inlet. The swirling flow contracts and the vortex core precesses at a frequency proportional to flow rate. A piezoceramic sensor outside the gas-wetted bore reads the precession frequency and converts it to volumetric flow through a calibrated K-factor. Built-in T+P compensation outputs mass flow in kg/h or Nm³/h directly on the 4-20 mA loop.
When should I choose swirl instead of vortex or thermal-mass?+
Choose swirl (LUXB) when straight pipe is short; the 3D upstream / 2D downstream rule fits tight skids where vortex needs 10D / 5D. Swirl also has no bluff body in the bore, which removes the ignition-risk concern on oxygen lines and the bluff-body wear concern on heavy-duty service. Choose vortex (LUGB) for steam-heavy service across DN15 to DN600. Choose thermal mass (TMF) when the medium is wet or the velocity sits below the swirl shedding floor.
What is the 3D+2D straight-pipe advantage in practice?+
Vortex meters need 10× DN of clean straight pipe upstream and 5× DN downstream to maintain ±0.5 % accuracy. The LUXB swirl meter uses a fixed swirl generator at the inlet, which dominates any upstream velocity profile and makes the meter immune to upstream disturbance after just 3× DN of straight pipe. On a DN200 line, this saves 1.4 m of upstream pipe; the difference between fitting an existing skid and rebuilding the piping.
What pipe sizes and pressure classes are available?+
The LUXB Series covers DN25 to DN300 pipe sizes. Standard pressure class is PN16 to PN250 (1.6 to 25 MPa, ANSI 150 to 2500 LB); factory-custom builds extend to 42 MPa for high-pressure M&R and gas-injection service. Working temperature is −40 to +250 °C across the Series; the LPG vapor version adds an integrated heat-trace termination box for vaporizer-outlet condensate management.
What hazardous-area certification ships with swirl meters?+
CNEX Ex d IIC T6 Gb (flameproof, Zone 1, gas group IIC, surface-temperature class T6) ships as the standard hazardous-area option on every order. EMC compliance to the EU Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive 2014/30/EU (Annex II) ships standard. IP65, IP66, and IP67 ingress ratings are selectable. The utility-grade calibration cert-grade trade-approval option is available on the LPG vapor model.
Is built-in T+P compensation standard on swirl meters?+
Built-in T+P compensation is standard on the LUXB Series. The integrated Pt1000 RTD and pressure transducer feed the on-board flow computer, outputting mass flow in kg/h or Nm³/h directly on the 4-20 mA loop with no external multivariable transmitter. On the natural-gas version, on-board AGA-style compressibility correction is included for pipeline-grade billing.
What is the lead time for swirl flow meter orders?+
Standard lead time is 5–7 business days from order confirmation, factory direct. Hazardous-area builds, utility-grade calibration cert approval pack on LPG vapor, and Hastelloy C-276 wetted-parts upgrade on biogas all ship within the same window.
