UP DN FLOW IN FLOW OUT UFM FAMILY Transit-time, 40 ps resolution DN15–DN6000 · 5–7 days

Ultrasonic flow meters measure liquid or gas flow by transit-time difference between paired transducers. Our UFM family covers DN3 to DN6000 across eighteen models: sixteen liquid (clamp-on, inline, insertion, water, BTU; reads any liquid above the 5 microsiemens per cm conductivity floor that EMF cannot) and two gas (CSUF transit-time, DN25 to DN200, clean dry natural-gas and industrial-gas service). Lead time 5 to 7 business days.

Ultrasonic flow meter models

Gas service ultrasonic (CSUF series)

Mid-grade transit-time gas builds for clean dry service. Distinct from the liquid UFM models above.

How transit-time ultrasonic flow measurement works

Transit-time ultrasonic measurement pairs two transducers across the flow stream. One faces upstream, one faces downstream. The on-board firmware alternates pulses in both directions and resolves the time difference to 40 ps. The difference is proportional to velocity; the proportionality constant is fixed in the factory calibration table.

The advantage over electromagnetic flow meters: transit-time reads any liquid regardless of conductivity. DI water, RO water, glycol blends, and light hydrocarbon up to 10 cSt all read on the UFM family. The 5 microsiemens per cm electromagnetic floor does not apply. Trade-offs: the signal fails on partial pipe-fill, and it degrades above 10,000 ppm suspended solids.

Universal install requirements.

Five rules apply to every ultrasonic install. Model-specific notes live on each model page.

  1. Respect the straight-pipe rule. Clamp-on: 10D upstream, 5D downstream, 30D after a pump. Inline factory-calibrated: 3D / 2D. Insertion: 5D / 3D. Plan the pipe routing at design stage.
  2. Verify pipe-fill before measurement starts. The pipe must stay 100 % liquid-filled. Air pockets falsify the transit-time signal. Closed-loop systems need an air vent on the loop high point upstream of the meter.
  3. Match transducer or probe to host-pipe material. Clamp-on supports steel, stainless, cast iron, copper, PVC, PE, HDPE, GRP, and cement-lined pipe. Scale-coated pipe may need acoustic coupling treatment. The inline body and water meter are sealed units.
  4. Run sensor cable separately from power cabling. Use the supplied shielded cable (SEYV75-2 for clamp-on and insertion), maximum 500 m sensor-to-converter, and keep 300 mm clear of VFD and motor-drive cabling.
  5. Align flow direction with the arrow on the meter body. Most models are bi-directional, but the calibrated forward direction is marked on the body or probe. Verify direction at commissioning.

Frequently asked questions

How does an ultrasonic flow meter measure flow?+
Two transducers face each other across the pipe; one upstream, one downstream. The on-board firmware sends pulses in both directions, computes the time difference to 40 ps, and converts the signal to velocity. Multiplying by pipe area returns volumetric flow.
When should I pick ultrasonic over electromagnetic, vortex, or turbine?+
Pick ultrasonic for three reasons. First, transit-time reads any liquid regardless of conductivity, where electromagnetic cannot read below 5 microsiemens per cm. Second, clamp-on retrofits without pipe cut. Third, large-bore: clamp-on covers DN6000, insertion covers DN3000. Use electromagnetic for conductive water DN10–DN1000 inline. Use vortex for steam and gas. Use turbine for viscous liquid above 10 cSt.
Which install style; external mount, inline / spool, or insertion?+
Pick by install constraint first. External mount (clamp-on, compact, quick-install, small-pipe, portable, handheld) retrofits on existing pipe with no cut. Inline pipe-segment (inline body) and spool piece (U6 / U7 / U8 single-path, M2 / M4 multi-path, S2 spool) drop into the line as a flanged or wafer segment for new construction. Insertion (hot-tap probe) suits DN50–DN6000 large-bore retrofit where pipe cuts are not viable. Within each install group, pick by accuracy grade; entry ±2.0 % (compact), standard ±1.0 % (U6 / quick-install / portable), precision ±0.5 % (clamp-on / inline / U7 inline / U8 / multi-path / handheld), custody ±0.5 % with 0.10 % repeatability (M4).
Does the UFM family cover BTU heat metering and utility billing?+
Yes. The Ultrasonic BTU Meter pairs transit-time flow with a PT100 supply and return pair plus on-board calorimetry firmware. Output kWh, MJ, or BTU for HVAC and district-heat energy sub-measurement. The Ultrasonic Water Meter is a battery integrated body for residential, commercial, and DMA billing with NB-IoT, LoRa, or GPRS AMR and a six-year Li-SOCl₂ cell.
What about custody-transfer certification (OIML R49, MID, EN 1434, AGA-9)?+
Custody-transfer certificates are not shipped from the factory. ISO 9001 calibration and EMC 2014/30/EU compliance ship standard with every meter. ISO 4064, OIML R49, MID MI-001, MID MI-004, EN 1434, OIML R75, and AGA-9 are buyer-arranged with the local notified body. Potable-water material approvals (NSF/ANSI 61, WRAS, ACS, DVGW, KC) are regional and also buyer-arranged.
What is the lead time and what compliance ships standard?+
Lead time is 5 to 7 business days from order confirmation, factory direct. Every meter ships with an ISO 9001 calibration certificate (serial, flow range, accuracy class), an EMC 2014/30/EU certificate, and a mill-cert traceability note. IP65 is standard for the transmitter, IP67 for the portable carry case, IP68 for submersible bodies. Ex d is a factory custom build, not a standard option.
