LWGQ Gas Turbine Flow Meter; biogas / biomethane build with titanium body and Ex d housing

LWGQ build for post-upgrade biomethane fiscal service; RNG (renewable natural gas) grid-injection and off-taker invoice flow measurement after H₂S scrubbing, CO₂ separation, and glycol drying. H₂S thresholds: ≤20 ppm at inlet (meter binding cap), ≤10 ppm typical delivered, 4 ppm the 316L-to-titanium crossover. T+P compensation outputs corrected volume on 4-20 mA. Raw biogas at digester outlet is wet and out-of-binding; go to biogas-swirl.

Benefits

  • Custody-grade ±0.5 % rate: factory K-factor (pulses-per-volume calibration) for RNG grid-injection billing and off-taker invoice settlement.
  • Titanium body anti-corrosive: tolerates residual H₂S 4–20 ppm at the meter inlet without 316L pitting; standard delivered biomethane targets ≤10 ppm.
  • 1:30 turndown: captures off-peak biomethane production swings narrow-turndown meters miss.
  • T+P compensation built-in: corrected volume on 4-20 mA, no external multivariable.
  • Dual hazardous-area: Ex d II CT6 Gb + Ex ia II CT6 Ga for skid + classified delivery points.
  • Multi-output: pulse, 4-20 mA, RS-485 Modbus, HART, GPRS / 4G for SCADA + utility AMR.
  • Lead time 5–7 business days from the factory.

Typical applications

Four post-upgrade biomethane applications where LWGQ is the fiscal-standard pick.

🏭

RNG grid-injection custody billing

Fence meter on the biomethane-to-grid skid. Reading is the fiscal-revenue basis under the utility tariff; T+P corrects volume to reference conditions.

💰

RNG off-taker purchase metering

Custody point at the off-taker delivery flange. Volume from the LWGQ plus heat content from inline GC drives the invoice for RNG purchase.

WWTP biomethane to CHP gas turbines

WWTP that upgrades digester biogas and feeds dedicated power turbines. Internal custody meter for energy accounting and CHP-bonus reporting.

🌿

Landfill-gas energy-revenue settlement

Landfill-gas projects upgrading to pipeline-quality biomethane. Custody meter at the upgrader outlet for renewable-fuel credit and off-taker invoice.

Installation

Five install rules. Pre-condition: gas must be dry single-phase with H₂S ≤ 20 ppm post-scrubbing; raw / wet biogas is out-of-binding.

  1. Verify dry biomethane pre-condition before install Confirm the upstream upgrading skid is in normal service: H₂S ≤ 20 ppm at the meter inlet, dew-point margin > 15 K, no condensate carry-over. Raw biogas (wet, >100 ppm H₂S) is out-of-binding; go to biogas-swirl. Wet-gas service voids the K-factor.
  2. Filter upstream of every meter on biomethane service Install a gas filter upstream of the meter to catch carry-over from amine / membrane / PSA upstream. Never connect the filter directly to the meter inlet flange; debris damages the rotor bearing and shifts the K-factor.
  3. Horizontal install with the housing arrow aligned to flow The LWGQ supports horizontal install only; vertical mount is not permitted. The flow direction arrow on the housing must match line flow. The pipe must run full of biomethane at the meter location.
  4. Maintain ≥ 3 DN upstream and ≥ 1 DN downstream straight pipe The integrated upstream flow conditioner accepts the 3 DN minimum upstream of any elbow or valve, and 1 DN minimum downstream. Tighter installations distort the velocity profile and bias the K-factor low.
  5. Install isolation valves and a bypass loop on both sides Upstream and downstream isolation valves let the meter come out of service for inspection without shutting the RNG injection point. The bypass loop stays closed during normal service and opens only during maintenance windows.

Frequently asked questions

What is a biogas turbine flow meter and where does it sit in the gas-upgrade chain?+
A biogas turbine flow meter is a velocity-type gas turbine sized and built for post-upgrade biomethane; the renewable-natural-gas stream that exits a biogas upgrading plant after H₂S scrubbing, CO₂ separation, and glycol drying. At that point the gas is ≥95 % CH₄, ≤10 ppm H₂S, ≤4 ppm H₂O, and single-phase dry. The LWGQ rotor reads volumetric flow through a calibrated K-factor; built-in T+P compensation outputs corrected volume at reference conditions on the 4-20 mA loop. The meter sits at the grid-injection skid or the off-taker delivery point as the fiscal-revenue basis for RNG settlement.
Can I use this meter on raw biogas from the digester or landfill?+
No. Raw biogas at the digester outlet is water-saturated, carries 30–45 % CO₂ and 100–10 000 ppm H₂S, and is often pulsating; out of the LWGQ medium binding (clean dry gas only). For raw biogas at the digester / CHP feed, use the biogas-swirl-flow-meter (LUXB Series) which tolerates wet gas, low pressure, and digester pulsation. The biogas-turbine page covers only the post-upgrade biomethane stream after the upgrading skid; that is where custody-grade ±0.5 % of rate billing happens.
Does the meter come certified to EN 16723 or OIML for biomethane fiscal use?+
The factory ships each meter with an ISO 9001 calibration certificate listing the K-factor, calibrated DN, and tested flow range. Hazardous-area cert is Ex d II CT6 Gb (flameproof) plus Ex ia II CT6 Ga (intrinsically safe); EMC compliance is to EU Directive 2014/30/EU. EN 16723 biomethane quality and OIML R 137 fiscal approval are buyer-arranged with a notified body in the deployment country; the meter is a candidate instrument that the buyer’s metrology consultant submits to a witnessed type-test if the local tariff regime requires it. Engineering will share build documentation and calibration traceability records to support that submission.
Why a titanium body and when should I pick 316L instead?+
Titanium alloy is the standard biogas-turbine body for residual H₂S tolerance after the upgrade module. Even on a well-tuned amine + polishing train, H₂S in delivered biomethane runs 4–20 ppm with humidity excursions during column upsets; 316L corrodes under that exposure while titanium does not. The 316L body option is acceptable when (a) the upstream upgrading skid has a final activated-carbon polishing bed holding H₂S below 4 ppm and (b) glycol dryer dew-point margin is >15 K. Aluminium body is not offered on this build; the trace H₂S risk for aluminium is unacceptable on RNG fiscal service.
When is biogas-turbine the right pick versus biogas-swirl on the same site?+
Same site; different points in the process. Biogas-swirl (LUXB) covers raw and partially-conditioned biogas at the digester outlet and pre-upgrading buffer: wet, low-pressure (2 kPa to 1.6 MPa), variable composition, sometimes pulsating from digester gas-pressure swings. Biogas-turbine (LWGQ) covers post-upgrade biomethane at the grid-injection skid or off-taker delivery point: dry, ≥95 % CH₄, pressurised (1.6 to 10 MPa), fiscal-billing basis. A typical RNG plant runs one swirl on the raw-biogas inlet to the upgrader and one turbine on the biomethane outlet to the grid. Don’t substitute; out-of-binding service voids the K-factor.
And versus biogas-thermal-mass; when does thermal-mass beat turbine?+
Biogas-thermal-mass (TMF) is the right pick for internal process metering on conditioned biogas where the buyer needs direct mass-flow output and the application is sub-billing (energy-balance, CHP fuel input, environmental reporting), not fiscal sale. TMF tolerates lower flow velocities and outputs Nm³/h directly with no T+P correction loop. Biogas-turbine takes over when the application crosses into fiscal custody; grid-injection billing, RNG off-taker invoice, premium-feedstock CHP-bonus reporting under REDII or comparable regime; where ±0.5 % of rate accuracy and audit-trail logging are required.
What is the lead time and what ships with each meter?+
Standard lead time is 5 to 7 business days from order confirmation, factory direct. Each meter ships with an ISO 9001 calibration certificate listing the K-factor, calibrated DN, and tested flow range; a mill cert for the titanium body material; the build-coded serial plate with model string; and a daily-and-interval logger file pre-formatted for audit retrieval. Hazardous-area cert options are Ex d II CT6 Gb (flameproof, Zone 1) for general RNG-skid service plus Ex ia II CT6 Ga (intrinsically safe) for classified-area delivery points. EMC compliance to EU Directive 2014/30/EU ships standard, with IP65 and IP66 ingress ratings selectable at order.
