Installation

Five install rules for sanitary Coriolis service.

  1. Drainable orientation; avoid product holdup pockets Install with the vibration tube vertically downward for liquid service so the meter drains fully between batches; this prevents product carryover and microbial holdup in the U-bend.
  2. Triclamp gasket torque per ASME BPE standard practice Use EPDM gaskets standard for brewery and dairy; PTFE upgrade for aggressive solvent service. Hand-tighten the hoop clamp then torque per the ASME BPE practice for the specified ferrule size.
  3. Pipe support both sides of the sensor The vibrating measuring tube is sensitive to external pipe vibration. Add pipe brackets close to the Triclamp connections; do not hang the sensor from the pipe on a long unsupported span.
  4. No upstream straight-pipe required Coriolis measurement is independent of velocity profile, so no upstream or downstream straight-pipe is required. This is a meaningful advantage over turbine and vortex meters on space-constrained brewery and dairy skids.
  5. Zero-point at process temperature after CIP Run a zero-correction cycle after first commissioning and after each CIP cycle, with flow stopped (valves closed both sides) and the sensor wetted at process temperature. The zero point shifts under installation stress and temperature change; re-zeroing after CIP keeps the tightest accuracy.

Frequently asked questions

What is a sanitary Coriolis flow meter and how does it work?+
A sanitary Coriolis flow meter measures mass flow directly from the Coriolis force on a vibrating measuring tube, with density and medium temperature derived on the same loop. The sanitary form factor packages those measuring tubes inside a polishable 316L hygienic body with Triclamp hoop-clamp process connections and ferrule sealing for tool-free CIP disconnect. Direct mass flow is the headline benefit for brewery, dairy, and pharmaceutical service; volumetric meters need a separate density input to convert liters into kilograms, while Coriolis reads kg/h on the 4-20 mA loop with no inferred input. The density channel doubles as a Brix or Plato indicator for brewery wort and beverage sugar tracking.
Triclamp or flange; which connection should I specify?+
Triclamp for any line that opens for cleaning validation, gasket inspection, or batch changeover; brewery wort kettle outlet, bright-tank transfer, dairy milk reception, cream separator outlet, pharmaceutical batch reactor outlet, formulation vessel discharge. The 1.5″, 2″, 3″, and 4″ Triclamp hoop-clamps mate directly with brewery and dairy plant piping and give tool-free disassembly. Flanged is the right pick for fixed installs that do not open between CIP cycles; utility headers, CIP solution distribution loops, and pump-discharge measurement points that stay in service. For mixed-service skids, specify Triclamp on the process side and flanged on the utility side at order.
How does the meter handle CIP and SIP cleaning cycles?+
The standard build covers CIP cleaning at typical brewery and dairy cycle temperatures; hot-water rinse, caustic 2 to 5% NaOH at +85 °C, acid CIP, and sanitizer ringing. The −20 to +150 °C medium temperature range also covers SIP (steam-in-place) at +150 °C as a transient cleaning step. The Triclamp hoop-clamp connection allows quick disassembly for gasket inspection between batch changeovers, and the polishable 316L wetted-parts surface minimizes microbial holdup. Note: the meter measures the CIP solvent flow during the cleaning cycle itself, not just product flow; a useful side benefit for CIP recipe verification. Re-zero the meter at process temperature after each CIP cycle for the tightest measurement accuracy.
What sanitary certification ships with the meter?+
The factory ships polishable 316L wetted parts, hoop-clamp Triclamp process connections with ferrule sealing, and a CIP-compatible build geometry; the physical build for sanitary service. What ships standard with every meter: 316L mill certificate traceable to heat number, polish-grade sign-off per the order spec (Ra typically 0.4 to 0.8 µm, buyer specifies the range), and the ISO 9001 K-factor calibration certificate. Sanitary type-approval certification per the local regulatory regime; whether that is the US dairy market regime, the EU food market regime, US pharmaceutical service review, or the local equivalent; is buyer-arranged with a notified body. The factory build documentation supports that submission; the certification itself is not held ex-factory. For regulated facilities, engage with the engineering team at quote stage so the build documentation matches the buyer’s audit regime.
How does the direct density measurement support Brix and Plato derivation?+
The Coriolis tube vibrates at a resonant frequency that shifts with fluid density on the same tube that measures mass flow; so a single meter reads mass flow, volumetric flow, density, and medium temperature simultaneously. Brewery and beverage operators use the density channel to derive degrees-Brix (sugar content in syrup, fruit juice, and wort) and degrees-Plato (extract content in beer wort) directly on the 4-20 mA loop or HART, without a separate refractometer or hydrometer at the measurement point. Density accuracy is ±0.002 g/cm³ across the 0.3 to 3.000 g/cm³ range, which is finer than the typical ±0.1 Brix industrial requirement on wort kettle and bright-tank transfer. Density data also gives dairy operators a fat-content indicator on cream-separator outlet and supports concentration tracking on cosmetics emulsion and fine-chemical batch dosing.
What is the lead time and what hygienic features ship standard?+
Lead time is 5 to 7 business days from order confirmation, factory direct. Each meter ships with the ISO 9001 K-factor calibration certificate, the 316L mill certificate traceable to heat number, and the polish-grade sign-off per the order spec. Hygienic features that ship standard: Triclamp hoop-clamp process connection in 1.5″ / 2″ / 3″ / 4″ with ferrule sealing, polishable 316L wetted parts (Ra typically 0.4 to 0.8 µm as specified at order), CIP-compatible build for brewery and dairy cleaning recipes, and SIP capability to +150 °C transient. Ex d [ia] IIC T6 Gb is standard for hazardous-area service (combined flameproof + intrinsically safe), with a Non-Ex option for general-purpose installs. IP67. The buyer-arranged sanitary type-approval pathway is documented in the engineering review at quote stage.
