Biogas Roots Flow Meter
Positive-Displacement Custody Billing for Post-Upgrade Biomethane / RNG
Accuracy ±0.5 / 1.0 % of rate options
Pipe DN25 to DN150 small-skid bores
Post-upgrade biomethane / RNG only (not raw biogas)
- Twin-lobe Roots PD principle; sealed-pocket volume per rotation for clean dry biomethane
- Wide turndown captures off-peak biomethane production swings narrow-range meters miss
- Ex ia IIC T6 Ga intrinsically safe + IP65 + 3.6 V lithium battery for off-grid AMR

Roots positive-displacement build for post-upgrade biomethane (Renewable Natural Gas / RNG) fiscal service; small-skid grid-injection, landfill-gas off-taker invoicing, and WWTP biomethane-to-CHP accounting after H₂S scrubbing, CO₂ separation, and drying. In-binding biomethane: ≥95 % CH₄, H₂S ≤10 ppm at meter inlet, dry single-phase. ±0.5 % of rate holds at the low end where turbine fades. Raw biogas at the digester outlet goes to the biogas swirl flow meter (LUXB series).
Benefits
- Custody-grade ±0.5 % of rate: factory K-factor (pulses-per-volume calibration) for small-skid RNG billing and off-taker invoice settlement.
- 1:30 turndown on top G-class: captures off-peak biomethane production swings without re-sizing the meter.
- Roots PD principle: sealed-pocket volume per rotation holds accuracy at the low-flow tail where turbine reads zero.
- Compact DN25 to DN150 bores: fits small-skid RNG outlets and WWTP biomethane-to-CHP service where DN200+ turbine is over-spec.
- Ex ia IIC T6 Ga intrinsically safe: classified RNG-skid delivery points with IP65 ingress.
- 3.6 V lithium battery AMR: multi-year service life on off-grid unmanned RNG endpoints; 4G wireless output option for utility telemetry.
- Lead time 5–7 business days from the factory.

Typical applications
Four post-upgrade biomethane applications where the Roots build is the small-skid fiscal pick.
Small-scale RNG grid-injection
Compact RNG plant under 500 Nm³/h capacity. Roots at the biomethane-to-grid skid gives fiscal-revenue basis on DN50 to DN100 bores.
Landfill-gas off-taker custody
Smaller landfill upgrading to pipeline-quality biomethane. Roots custody meter at the upgrader outlet for renewable-fuel credit and off-taker invoice.
WWTP biomethane to CHP accounting
WWTP that upgrades digester biogas and feeds on-site CHP. Internal Roots meter for energy accounting and CHP-bonus reporting at DN25 to DN50 compact scale.
Off-peak production wide-turndown billing
1:30 turndown holds ±0.5 % of rate across off-peak / shoulder / peak biomethane production swings. One meter covers the full daily cycle without re-sizing.

Installation
Five install rules. Pre-condition: biomethane must be dry single-phase post-upgrade; raw biogas is outside the operating range.
- Pre-condition biomethane upstream of the Roots meter Confirm the upstream upgrading skid is in normal service: H₂S scrubbing (amine / activated carbon) and drying (glycol or refrigeration) running, delivered H₂S ≤ 10 ppm, dew-point margin > 15 K, no condensate carry-over. Raw biogas at the digester outlet voids the K-factor; go to biogas-swirl (LUXB).
- Filter upstream of every meter on biomethane service Install a gas filter upstream of the meter to catch carry-over from upstream upgrading. Never connect the filter directly to the meter inlet flange; leave one DN of straight pipe between filter and meter. Debris damages the rotor and shifts the K-factor.
- Pressure regulator upstream For small-skid RNG delivery to grid or off-taker, install a pressure regulator upstream of the meter to stabilize inlet pressure. The Roots PD principle reads volume per rotation, so steady inlet pressure protects the K-factor against pulsation upset.
- No low-point install; route condensate trap upstream Roots cannot tolerate liquid carry-over or condensate slugs. Never install at a line low point. If post-dryer condensate is possible during upstream upset, route a condensate trap upstream of the meter; the trap drain is part of the install package.
- Flow-arrow alignment with line direction The flow direction arrow on the casing must align with line flow. Both horizontal and vertical (top-down) mounts are supported per the install schematics. The pipe must run full of biomethane at the meter location.
