Multi-Path Ultrasonic Flow Meter M4 (4-channel custody)

The Four-Path Ultrasonic Flow Meter is a 4-channel transit-time instrument for liquid service, DN25 to DN5000. Four paths sample about 80 % of the velocity profile across the cross-section. Accuracy ±0.5 % at 0.5 to 5 m/s, repeatability 0.10 %. C8 inline or W8 split-body wall-mount. Optional PT100 pair for kWh / MJ / BTU output. Modbus RTU, 4-20 mA, OCT pulse. 24 V DC. 5–7 business days from the factory.

Benefits

  • 4 paths sample the cross-section evenly. Four planes cover roughly 80 % of the velocity profile; 2-path covers about 60 %. The gap matters on very-large-bore lines.
  • ±0.5 % across DN25 to DN5000. Velocity 0.5 to 5 m/s. Linearity ±0.5 %, repeatability 0.10 %. Four path readings cross-check each other; the firmware flags drift on any one path.
  • Tolerates severe upstream disturbance. Double elbow out-of-plane, half-open valve immediately upstream; the 4-path average converges where a 1- or 2-path meter cannot. Suits constrained retrofits.
  • Optional PT100 pair returns kWh / MJ / BTU. Same transmitter, two PT100 inputs, on-board calorimetry. Suits district-heat substation primary and large-bore HVAC tenant chargeback.
  • Modbus RTU + 4-20 mA + OCT pulse + relay. 24 V DC, 3-5 W. Response 500 ms. Pre-configured slave address ships with each meter.

Applications

💧

Very-large-bore custody trunk

Water-utility DN1500 to DN5000 primary metering. 4-path closes the large-bore profile under-sampling gap that limits 1- and 2-path meters. Calibration record ships with each meter.

↘️

Severe-disturbance retrofit

Refinery or petrochemical install between a double elbow out-of-plane and a half-open valve. The 4-path average tolerates disturbance that defeats lower-path counts.

🔥

District-heat primary (with BTU)

Large-bore substation entry with the optional PT100 pair. Returns kWh / MJ / BTU on Modbus. Suits 40 to 90 K delta-T.

📋

Fiscal sub-meter audit trail

Four path readings cross-check each other; the firmware flags drift on any one path. Suits utility chargeback and tenant billing audit trails.

Installation rules.

Five rules keep 4-path averaging accurate.

  1. 5D upstream, 3D downstream straight-pipe. The 4-path average tolerates more upstream disturbance than lower-path meters; hold 10D after pumps.
  2. Orient the chord planes off the elbow plane. The four-chord average converges fastest when each chord crosses a different sector of the profile.
  3. Pipe must stay 100 % liquid-filled. Air pockets falsify the transit-time signal on all four paths. Closed loops need an air vent upstream of the meter.
  4. Mount W8 transmitter on a stable wall, −40 to +60 deg C ambient. IP54 housing; plant room, not outdoor submerged service.
  5. Configure register map and slave address at commissioning. Factory pre-configures from BMS or DCS spec. Record both in the commissioning log.

Frequently asked questions

How does a 4-channel (4-path) ultrasonic flow meter work?+
Four transducer pairs sit on four offset planes of the pipe cross-section. Each pair fires acoustic pulses upstream and downstream and times the transit difference, giving a path-average velocity. The firmware applies Gaussian-quadrature path weights to combine the four path velocities into an estimate of the cross-section mean velocity. Four planes sample more of the profile than 1 or 2 paths, so asymmetry from upstream elbows, reducers, or partial valves averages out across the four paths.
What is the gain vs a 2-channel multi-path meter?+
Same headline accuracy (±0.5 % at 0.5-5 m/s) but two physical advantages. First, sampling density. Four paths cover roughly 80 % of the cross-section profile via Gaussian quadrature, where 2 paths cover about 60 %. On very-large-bore lines (DN1000+) where the profile is harder to under-sample, the gap matters. Second, redundancy. Four independent path readings provide a self-consistency check the firmware can flag if one drifts. Useful for fiscal sub-measurement audit trails. Cost is roughly 70-80 % above the 2-path meter.
How does the meter handle severe upstream disturbance?+
Double elbow out-of-plane, half-open valve immediately upstream, sudden pipe expansion; these defeat 1- and 2-path meters because profile asymmetry exceeds what a 2-path average can correct. Four paths on different planes bracket the asymmetric profile symmetrically, and the path-weighted average holds where meters with fewer paths cannot. Severe disturbance still degrades accuracy below ±0.5 %, but the degradation is much smaller than what a 2-path or single-path meter shows.
Can the same body meter heat energy as well as flow?+
Yes, with the optional PT100 supply + return pair. The transmitter accepts two PT100 inputs and runs the BTU calorimetry firmware that solves E = ∫(ṃ × Cp × ΔT) dt. Output is selectable between kWh, MJ, and BTU on the display and on the 4-20 mA energy-rate channel. Suits district-heat substation primary, large-bore HVAC, and fiscal-billing applications where the 4-path self-consistency check provides audit-trail redundancy. Specify with-BTU at order.
What ships in the package and what is the lead time?+
The package ships with the flow body (C8) or transducer set (W8), the transmitter, signal cable (length factory-set per order), the calibration record (serial number, tested flow range), and a pre-configured Modbus register map and slave address. Optional PT100 BTU pair adds two temperature sensors plus coupling paste and stainless straps. Lead time is 5 to 7 business days from the factory. Notified-body custody-transfer certificates are buyer-arranged with the local metrology authority.
