Compact Clamp-On Ultrasonic Flow Meter

The Compact Clamp-On Ultrasonic Flow Meter is a transit-time instrument that clamps to the outside of a host pipe (OD 9.53 to OD 220 mm, DN6 to DN200). No pipe cut, no shutdown. ±2.0 % of reading at 0.3 to 5 m/s; repeatability 0.8 %. Display choice spans 1.3-inch OLED, 1.54-inch IPS, and 2.4-inch IPS. Modbus RTU, 4-20 mA, OCT pulse. Optional BTU pair for kWh / MJ / BTU. 24 V DC, 3 W. 5–7 business days.

Benefits

  • External clamp-on install; no pipe cut, no shutdown. Transducer pair mounts on host pipe with coupling gel and stainless straps. 1 to 2 hours per meter on DN50-DN200.
  • Sub-DN200 host pipe coverage. OD 9.53 to OD 220 mm covers small branch lines, sub-utility taps, packaged-skid sub-loops. Above DN200, go to the full-size clamp-on family.
  • Display choice for the same firmware. 1.3-inch OLED 128 x 64 entry, 1.54-inch IPS LCD 240 x 240, or 2.4-inch IPS LCD 320 x 240. Pick by readability need at the install point.
  • Optional BTU version at the same ±2.0 % flow side. PT100 supply + return pair. Output kWh / MJ / BTU. Energy-output accuracy widens with delta-T; see FAQ.
  • 24 V DC, 3 W. Modbus RTU + 4-20 mA + OCT pulse. IP54-IP65 transmitter housing (display version dependent). 5–7 business days from the factory.

Applications

🏭

Plant sub-utility branch flow measurement

Small DN15-DN100 branch lines off plant primary. Cooling-water tap, condensate return, dosing reference. ±2.0 % suits trend logging.

🔁

Secondary verification

Cross-check a primary inline meter for drift on DN50-DN200. ±2.0 % is enough to flag a 5 % deviation that warrants service.

📦

Packaged-skid sub-loop telemetry

Chiller cabinet branch, dosing skid sub-line, lab water cart. Modbus into the skid PLC; OLED display for service access.

🔥

Sub-metering BTU on small loops

Optional PT100 pair adds energy output on small DHW or chilled-water sub-loops at the same flow-side ±2.0 %. Not billing grade.

Installation rules.

  1. 10D upstream, 5D downstream straight-pipe (D = host-pipe diameter). Small-bore service still benefits from the rule; short runs can be served at relaxed accuracy.
  2. Clean and prep the host-pipe outer surface. Wipe paint, rust, and insulation off the transducer footprint. Apply coupling gel; secure with stainless straps at the specified spacing.
  3. Verify 100 % pipe-fill. Air pockets falsify the transit-time signal. Mount on horizontal or vertical-upward; avoid high-point air collection.
  4. Re-apply coupling gel every 6 to 12 months in outdoor service. UV and temperature cycles degrade the gel layer; indoor service extends life beyond 12 months.
  5. Configure Modbus register and slave address at commissioning. Factory pre-configures from BMS or DCS spec; record both in the commissioning log.

Frequently asked questions

How does compact clamp-on differ from the full-size clamp-on family?+
Same transit-time physics on both, but a different scale and accuracy class. Compact clamp-on covers OD 9.53 to OD 220 mm host pipe (roughly DN6 to DN200) at ±2.0 % of reading; the full-size clamp-on family covers DN15 to DN6000 via three transducer pairs (S, M, L) at ±0.5 % of rate. Compact wins on price and form factor for sub-DN200 sub-utility branches, secondary verification, and packaged-skid sub-loops where ±2.0 % is sufficient. Full-size wins on accuracy and on large-bore pipe.
When is ±2.0 % accuracy enough?+
Trending, dosing reference, secondary verification of a primary meter, packaged-skid sub-loop telemetry, lab water audit, batch reconciliation at small DN. Not for custody-transfer, fiscal billing, or trade reconciliation; those need ±0.5 % or tighter. The ISO 4064 R-class threshold for residential billing also lands well above ±2.0 %, so this meter is not a utility billing meter even though it covers the same DN range.
Which display version fits my install?+
The display versions span a price-readability trade-off. 1.3-inch OLED 128 x 64 is the smallest and lowest cost; readable indoors at close range, suits panel-mount sub-loops. 1.54-inch IPS LCD 240 x 240 adds 4-direction rotation and color contrast; readable outdoors and at panel-front service. 2.4-inch IPS LCD 320 x 240 is the largest with full IP65 housing; readable from across the plant aisle. Specify display version at order; the firmware feature set is otherwise identical.
Does the BTU version add accuracy step-down?+
No. The BTU version pairs the transit-time flow side with a PT100 supply + return temperature pair and runs the calorimetry firmware that solves E = integral of (m-dot x Cp x delta-T) dt. Flow-side accuracy stays at ±2.0 % of reading. Energy-output accuracy depends on the delta-T window the same way other heat meters do; at 4 K HVAC delta-T the PT100 0.1 deg C resolution dominates and energy accuracy sits in the 5 to 7 % range; at 30 K DHW delta-T the same hardware delivers under 4 %. For tighter billing-grade BTU, go to the inline or large-bore precision counterpart instead.
What ships in the package and what is the lead time?+
The package ships with the transmitter (display version per order), the transducer pair, ultrasonic coupling gel, stainless mounting straps for the specified host-pipe OD range, signal cable, and the calibration record (serial number + tested flow range). BTU version adds the PT100 supply + return pair plus thermowell or clamp-on temperature mount. Lead time is 5 to 7 business days from the factory; ISO 9001 calibration certificate ships standard.
