CSUF transit-time ultrasonic gas meter for clean dry industrial gas at low to medium pressure (up to 1.6 MPa); industrial-park N2 distribution sub-measurement, chemical-park inerting boundary measurement, and ISO 50001 compressed-air audit on DN100 and larger mains. Paired crystals on an oblique path read the Δt between downstream and upstream pulses; no rotors, no obstructions, no pressure drop, full bidirectional capability. Binding is dry single-phase only; wet gas, 2-phase service, and cryogenic service are out of scope.

Benefits

  • Zero pressure drop: non-intrusive transit-time path preserves blower / regulator margin on plant mains and unloaded compressed-air lines.
  • Bidirectional measurement: cross-feed N2 manifolds and recirculating compressed-air loops read in either direction without a parallel meter.
  • 1:100 turndown standard: one meter spans peak shift load through off-shift leak drift; the ISO 50001 audit range a turbine bottom-of-range cannot hold.
  • No moving parts in the gas path: no rotor wear, no K-factor drift, no scheduled rotor replacement across the meter life.
  • 4G AMR plus 3.6 V lithium battery: off-grid endpoints stream readings to a back-office energy-management or sub-billing system without permanent mains supply.
  • Ex d IIC T6 Gb flameproof + IP65: classified industrial gas service with outdoor pipe-rack ingress.
  • Lead time 5–7 business days from the factory; ISO 9001 calibration certificate ships with every meter.

Typical applications

Four industrial dry-gas applications where the CSUF ultrasonic is the standard pick.

⚗

Industrial-park N2 distribution sub-measurement

DN150 / DN200 N2 ring main feeding tenants; zero ΔP preserves ring-loop pressure; bidirectional reads cross-feed balancing.

🏭

Chemical-park inerting boundary measurement

Cross-fence N2 boundary between operators on DN100 / DN150 mains. 1:100 turndown spans peak-batch through idle-purge ranges on one meter.

📊

ISO 50001 compressed-air audit on mains

DN100 to DN200 plant-air supply audit. Zero ΔP avoids parasitic load on the compressor; 4G AMR streams shift-load and off-shift leak drift.

🏚

Town-gas regulator-station accounting

Low-pressure distribution-station sub-account metering at DN100 / DN150. Pressure-compensation option gives standard-volume totals for invoicing.

Installation

Five install rules for the CSUF on industrial dry-gas service.

  1. Upstream straight pipe ≥10 D, downstream ≥5 D Install mandate: 10 pipe diameters of straight pipe upstream of the meter and 5 pipe diameters downstream, measured from the nearest fitting or disturbance source. Honor the rule even where path-averaging dampens profile error; it is the calibration condition.
  2. Gas filter sized for line service upstream Particulate fouls the crystal faces and shifts the zero. Install a gas filter ahead of the upstream straight-pipe run; service the filter on the plant maintenance interval.
  3. Pressure regulator upstream of the filter Stabilize inlet pressure to within the meter’s working range with a regulator on the supply side. Stable inlet pressure improves the signal-to-noise ratio of the transit-time read and protects the K-factor across the load swing.
  4. No wet-gas service; route condensate away Condensate carry-over distorts the acoustic path and blocks the crystal face. The CSUF is not for wet or 2-phase service; route wet biogas, raw landfill gas, or condensate-bearing service to the biogas swirl flow meter (LUXB Series). For any service with condensate risk install a knock-out drum upstream.
  5. Mount sheltered, earth the Ex housing Locate the meter in a sheltered position or fit a sunshade for outdoor mounts; the electronics are rated −20 to +60 °C ambient. For the Ex d build, earth the housing per the local hazardous-area code and match Ex-certified cable glands.

Frequently asked questions

What is an ultrasonic gas flow meter and how does the transit-time principle work?+
An ultrasonic gas flow meter is a non-intrusive volumetric instrument. A pair of crystals is mounted at an oblique angle across the spool body; one crystal sends a pulse downstream (riding the gas flow), the other sends a pulse upstream (fighting the flow). The time difference Δt between the two transit times is directly proportional to the mean axial gas velocity along the acoustic path. There are no rotors, no obstructions, and no moving parts in the gas path, so the pressure drop across the meter is effectively zero and the meter reads accurately in either flow direction. Single-path and dual-path builds are offered for this Series; higher-path utility-billing builds are a different product class and are not part of this range.
How does this differ from the industrial-gas Roots PD counterpart at DN25 to DN150?+
The two counterparts cover different sweet spots on industrial-gas service; pick by flow range, pressure-drop tolerance, and audit need. The industrial-gas-roots-flow-meter (LQ Series, twin-lobe PD) wins low-flow tenant fence-inlet billing at DN25 to DN100 with ±0.5 % of rate accuracy and 1:30 turndown; honest fact; Roots is the more accurate option in its range and the right pick for per-tenant invoice precision. The CSUF gas ultrasonic on this page wins DN100 to DN200 mains metering with zero pressure drop, bidirectional measurement, no rotor wear over the meter life, and 1:100 turndown for ISO 50001 audit that spans peak shift load through off-shift leak drift. CSUF is ±1.0 % of rate; mid-grade audit accuracy, not tenant-billing grade. For per-tenant invoice sub-billing on DN25 to DN100 use Roots; for plant-mains audit / sub-measurement at DN100+ where pressure drop matters use CSUF.
How does this differ from the LWGQ N2 and compressed-air turbine counterparts?+
LWGQ turbine is the higher-accuracy bulk pick across the family at DN25 to DN300 (N2 version DN50 to DN200, compressed-air version DN25 to DN300) and 1.6 to 10 MPa; chemical-park bulk N2 / O2 distribution headers and plant-air main supply runs where line velocity stays inside the turbine working range. CSUF ultrasonic is the pick when (a) DN150 or DN200 mains pressure drop becomes a problem for blower / regulator margin, (b) the service needs bidirectional measurement (cross-feed N2 distribution, recirculating air audit), (c) flow ranges from full peak down to off-shift leak drift through a 1:100 turndown that turbine bottom-of-range cannot hold, or (d) no rotor wear is required because the meter sits on a hard-to-reach plant-mains run. Above 1.6 MPa or for ±0.5 % of rate bulk-N2 custody, go to LWGQ turbine.
What is the 4G wireless and lithium-battery AMR option suited for?+
The 3.6 V lithium battery (power code V) plus integrated 4G wireless output (signal code 7) powers the meter and streams instantaneous flow, totalizer, and any compensated T/P readings to a back-office energy-management or sub-billing system without permanent mains supply. The combination suits ISO 50001 audit endpoints on rooftop compressed-air mains, chemical-park N2 distribution branch valves on remote pipe racks, and unmanned industrial-park sub-measurement points where pulling 24 VDC service is impractical. Battery service life depends on logging interval and signal strength; specify the duty cycle at the configurator stage for an engineered service-life estimate. For permanent panel installs select 24 VDC (power code U) with RS-485 Modbus, HART, or 4-20 mA output to the plant DCS.
Is the meter certified for utility pattern-approval billing?+
No. The factory ships an ISO 9001 calibration certificate with each meter listing the calibrated DN, K-factor, accuracy class, and tested flow range across the published range, calibrated against air on a reference rig. Hazardous-area certification is Ex d IIC T6 Gb flameproof; ingress is IP65; EMC compliance is to EU Directive 2014/30/EU. Pattern-approval / type-approval for utility-tariff billing under the local gas-meter metrology regime is buyer-arranged with a notified body in the deployment country; the factory provides build documentation and traceable calibration records to support the buyer's type-test submission. For utility-tariff billing at ±0.5 % of rate the better pick is the LWGQ gas-turbine counterpart; this CSUF model is positioned for industrial sub-measurement and ISO 50001 audit, not utility tariff billing.
What is the lead time and how is the meter calibrated and shipped?+
Standard lead time is 5 to 7 business days from order confirmation, factory direct. Each meter is calibrated at the factory against air on a reference rig per the selected accuracy class (±1.0 % or ±1.5 % of rate), tested across the published flow range for the selected DN, and shipped with the ISO 9001 calibration certificate listing K-factor, calibrated DN, tested range, and accuracy class. The Ex d IIC T6 Gb flameproof certification, IP65 ingress, EMC 2014/30/EU compliance, and the build-coded serial plate ship standard. Witness calibration at a third-party metrology institute before shipment can be arranged on request; specify the witness requirement at quote so the lead time can accommodate the booking.
