Long-radius flow nozzle primary element with rounded converging inlet and cylindrical throat for high-velocity steam service

Rounded inlet · cylindrical throat · corner / D-D/2 / flange taps

ISO 5167-3 / GB/T 2624 long-radius profile shown

Flow nozzle primary elements measure clean gas, superheated steam, and natural-gas flow on DN50 to DN1200 pipe at pressures up to PN42 MPa and temperatures from −200 to +800 °C. The rounded inlet generates a square-law ΔP; an external DP transmitter reads it and square-root-extracts the flow per ISO 5167-3 / GB/T 2624. Accuracy is ±0.5 % of flow, repeatability ±0.1 %; designed per the conventions used in ASME PTC 6 main-steam practice.

Benefits

  • Erosion-resistant rounded inlet: no sharp edge to round off; discharge-coefficient drift that limits orifice life on high-velocity gas, superheated steam, or dust-laden flue gas is much slower.
  • Mid-range permanent ΔP loss: ~30–40 % of measured, between square-edge orifice 50–70 % and classical venturi 10–15 %.
  • DN50–DN1200, PN0.6–PN42 MPa, −200 to +800 °C; cryogenic LNG / LH2 through superheated steam in one element.
  • ±0.5 % of flow per ISO 5167-3 wet-cal, ±0.1 % repeatability; system accuracy depends on DP transmitter + install conformance.
  • ISO 5167-3 / GB/T 2624 conventions used in ASME PTC 6 practice (designed-per, not independently PTC 6 certified); long-radius and ISA-1932 profiles supplied by quote.
  • Transmitter-agnostic: pair with our factory 4-20 mA / HART DP transmitter or reuse Rosemount 3051, Yokogawa EJA, Honeywell ST3000.
  • Lead time 5–7 business days from the factory.

Installation

Five field rules for an ISO 5167-conformant install and a stable DP reading.

  1. Honor the upstream straight-pipe length ISO 5167-3 sets the longest straight-pipe requirement on the site: at β = 0.5 expect 22 pipe diameters upstream of a single 90° elbow, scaling to 50 diameters for two out-of-plane elbows. Five diameters downstream is sufficient. Less straight-pipe means a swirling or asymmetric velocity profile and the discharge coefficient drifts off-cal. When the line cannot supply the run, specify a flow conditioner upstream or quote the integrated DP element with pre-cal in the as-installed geometry.
  2. Mount horizontally with impulse lines sloped to drain or vent Horizontal pipe orientation is preferred for liquid, gas, and steam. Impulse lines run downward to the transmitter for liquid (drains condensate to the transmitter pot), upward for gas (vents bubbles back to the line), and downward with seal-pot condensate columns for steam (standard practice). Vertical mount is permitted with flow direction marked on the element body.
  3. Match tap geometry to the order spec Three options per ISO 5167-3; corner taps (flush with the carrier ring), D and D/2 taps (one pipe diameter upstream / half a diameter downstream), or flange taps (25.4 mm = 1 inch from each face). Flange taps are most common for DN50 to DN600. The shop drilling matches the order code; do not field-drill alternate taps after install.
  4. Freeze-trace impulse lines in cold ambient When ambient drops below 0 °C and the medium is liquid or a condensable gas, the impulse lines must be steam-traced or electric-traced to prevent freeze-up. The build does not supply heat-trace; the buyer specifies and installs it. Total impulse-line length should stay under 5 m to minimize ΔP lag.
  5. Zero the DP transmitter at full pressure with flow stopped After install, with the primary element pressurized but the line flow stopped, open the equalizing valve on the manifold to zero both transmitter ports against the same static pressure, then run the transmitter zero sequence. Close the equalizing valve and open the two isolation valves to return the loop to service. Record the baseline offset for later trend audit.

Frequently asked questions

What is a flow nozzle and when do I pick it over an orifice plate?+
A flow nozzle is a differential-pressure primary element with a smooth rounded inlet that contracts the flow into a short cylindrical throat. The constriction generates a square-law pressure drop that an external DP transmitter reads and square-root-extracts to volumetric or mass flow per ISO 5167-3 / GB/T 2624. You pick the nozzle over an orifice plate when the service erodes the orifice sharp edge within months; high-velocity gas, superheated steam, abrasive dust in flue gas, and power-station main-steam service are the classic cases. The rounded entry has no sharp edge to round off, so discharge coefficient drift is much slower over the install life. Mid-cost between orifice and venturi, permanent pressure loss roughly 30 to 40 percent of measured ΔP. The page covers DN50 to DN1200 on PN0.6 to PN42 MPa, −200 to +800 °C, ±0.5 % of flow per ISO 5167 wet-cal, repeatability ±0.1 %.
How does the flow nozzle differ from a classical venturi?+
Both share the rounded-contraction principle and both resist erosion, but the venturi adds a long divergent recovery cone after the throat that recovers most of the kinetic-energy ΔP. The numbers are clean: classical venturi permanent loss is roughly 10 to 15 percent of measured ΔP, flow nozzle is roughly 30 to 40 percent, square-edge orifice is 50 to 70 percent. Pick the venturi when permanent pressure loss is the controlling cost; head-sensitive low-NPSH pumped lines, large-bore cooling-water headers on tight pump curves, mine dewatering. Pick the nozzle when erosion resistance matters but the head budget can absorb 30 to 40 percent; most superheated-steam mains, high-velocity gas headers, and power-station main-steam custody where the steam header is already at high ΔP and the recovery cone is not worth the cost or length. The nozzle is also shorter, cheaper, and ships faster than a fabricated classical venturi at the same DN.
When should I route out of the flow nozzle to a different series?+
Five out-routes. First, slurry, particulate-laden flow, or wet-gas with entrained liquid carryover plugs the impulse lines and shifts the discharge coefficient; go to electromagnetic for conductive slurry or to Coriolis for two-phase tolerance. Second, head-sensitive lines where the 30 to 40 percent permanent loss exceeds the pump head budget; go to a classical venturi (10 to 15 percent loss) or to an averaging pitot tube (under 5 percent loss). Third, very-high turndown above 1:10; DP physics caps the dynamic range; go to Coriolis (1:200), vortex (1:70), or ultrasonic (1:100). Fourth, very-large-bore service above DN1200; the nozzle range tops out at DN1200; the averaging pitot tube scales to DN9000 for power-station cooling-water headers and stack/duct gas. Fifth, high-viscosity liquid above 50 cSt; the discharge coefficient is Reynolds-sensitive and Reynolds correction grows; go to Coriolis or to oval-gear positive-displacement.
What ships, what is the lead time, and what install conditions does the nozzle require?+
Lead time is 5 to 7 business days from the factory. The kit ships with the primary element (long-radius or ISA-1932 profile per quote), flanges or weld-prep ends per the connection code, an ISO 9001 wet-flow factory calibration certificate with discharge coefficient and beta ratio, and a sizing record traceable to the buyer-supplied operating P / T / fluid composition. The DP transmitter ships separately or as a pre-mated integrated build (go to the integrated DP element for factory zero/span). Install requires the longest upstream straight-pipe run on the site; typically 22 pipe diameters upstream of a single elbow at β = 0.5, scaling to 50 pipe diameters for two out-of-plane elbows. Five pipe diameters downstream is sufficient. Mount horizontally with impulse lines sloped downward for liquid service, upward for gas; freeze-trace impulse lines in cold ambient. After install, zero the DP transmitter at full pressure with flow stopped and the equalizing valve open.
