Frequently asked questions

How do I pick the right flow meter series for my application?+
Pick by medium first. Steam or dry gas: vortex. Low-density gas or tight straight-pipe: precession swirl. Gas mass flow or direct Nm³/h: thermal mass. Conductive liquid above 5 µS/cm: electromagnetic. Low-viscosity liquid (≤10 cSt) for custody-grade billing: turbine. Any liquid regardless of conductivity, or large-bore retrofit without pipe cut: ultrasonic. Each series page has a “when to specify” table that resolves edge cases.
What about non-conductive liquid like DI water, glycol, or light hydrocarbon?+
Electromagnetic flow meters cannot read below the 5 µS/cm conductivity floor. For DI water, RO water, glycol-water blends, and light hydrocarbon up to 10 cSt; use ultrasonic. The UFM series (clamp-on, inline, insertion) reads any liquid above the signal noise floor regardless of conductivity. For high-viscosity hydrocarbon above 10 cSt (HFO, heavy oils); use Coriolis (DN1-DN300 across hydrogen / cryogenic / HFO / custody / sanitary / slurry; see Coriolis Flow Meters).
What is the lead time, and what compliance ships standard?+
Lead time is 5 to 7 business days from order confirmation, factory direct. Every meter ships with an ISO 9001 calibration certificate (serial number, tested flow range, accuracy class) and EMC 2014/30/EU compliance. CNEX Ex d IIC T6 Gb is available on most series as a factory option. Custody-transfer certificates (OIML, MID, AGA, EN 1434) are buyer-arranged with the local notified body.
Can ProFlow custom-build a meter for an unusual service condition?+
Yes. Most catalog-listed versions cover common service. For exotic chemistry (sour gas, high-chloride, cryogenic, supercritical CO2), HT/HP service above the standard range, or special wetted materials (Hastelloy C, Titanium, Tantalum, Duplex 2205); send the engineering team the application context and target spec. Custom-build adds 1 to 3 weeks beyond the standard 5–7 business day lead time.
